Everybody wants free publicity, right? I thought so, but it amazes me how many opportunities for recognition that business owners pass up. Social media is a great tool for this, yet many business owners aren’t paying attention to their accounts.

I like to document things. I try to “check in” when I visit different places or post a picture of something cool they are selling. I expect the business owner to “like” my post or add a comment to capitalize or just say thanks. Sadly, this doesn’t always happen. That is free publicity lost. That is a mistake. If you are a business with a…

Kevin Willett says to surround yourself with people who inspire you

Yesterday, my friend posted on social media, that every time she is nice it comes back to bite her. I think we can all relate to that feeling sometimes, but please don’t give in to the temptation to change and stop helping people. However, I do think you need to re-evaluate the relationships you have with the people in your life from time to time. I know this is hard for most people. Sadly, you may have people in your life who are holding you back from reaching your goals and dreams, so you have to ask yourself why…

Kevin Willett says the more specific you are the easier it is to refer you.

Has anyone ever asked you who is a good client for you? How did you respond? Did you say everyone? Or anyone? You want to be careful not to reply that way because it doesn’t help the person identify potential clients for you.

Let me give you an example. Let’s say you are a financial planner and you say everyone would make a good client. Now I would agree everyone could benefit from working with you. But if I know a lot of financial planners what will prompt me to remember you?  If you tell…

My friend tried to start a conversation this week with one of his referral partners at a networking event and the person told him ‘thanks, but I am all set. I am happy with the person I am working with’. We all have business relationships that we are happy with, but when you say you are all set, it hurts your chance to develop a referral relationship with the person you are speaking with. This happens all the time.

Rather than just saying I am all set, how about saying something like ‘that is not a match for me, but tell me more about what you are doing in case I meet someone who…

I have been working on some new ideas for networking events, such as Speed Networking. I am amazed by how many people tell me “nobody wants to attend speed networking events, it is a horrible idea”. What I have found is, if someone does not like my idea, they will expand their opinion from they do not want to attend to nobody wants to attend.  Well, the first two speed networking events have sold out. So far, so good.

When someone offers me an opinion, I typically listen to it and then ask myself do they have any valid points? Just because someone does not like your idea does…

I had today off. I went on a day trip with my Wife and Mother-in-Law and had some fun. In the past, I never would have thought of taking days off, because like most people, I listened to the gurus. They tell us that we have to hustle and grind and work all the time to be successful. I have learned the hard way that there is a time to work hard, but you need to find balance in your life and make time for family and friends. We let relationships slip because we think there will be time later to have fun, once we are successful and reach our goals. But sadly that is not always true. There was…

When someone takes the time to comment on my videos I try my best to send them a message thanking them and asking if there is anything I can do to help them.  Last week I thanked a woman from New York City and when I asked her how I could help, she said she needed help finding a job. Now it would have been super easy to say ‘I am sorry but I don’t know anyone in New York City’. Instead I said lets schedule a call to see what we can do. During the call she told me that she is starting a business to help people impacted by cancer. She told me her story about being a survivor. We spent…
