Networking: How to Leave a Lasting Impression

When you’re networking, you need to remember that you’re not just there to collect fancy hors d'oeuvres; you’re there to collect contacts, and that means you need to do your best to leave a lasting impression! But, just how do you ensure you’re memorable for all the right reasons?

1. Elevator Pitch: Make It Snappy

This isn’t the time to deliver your entire business plan or life story. You’ve got about 30 seconds to sparkle. Think of your pitch as a movie trailer—enough to intrigue but not so long that they start zoning out. Keep it crisp, clear, and compelling. Hint at your business’s unique value proposition and make them eager to learn more.

2. Be Authentically You

In a sea of suits and business cards, authenticity can be your life raft. Don’t just spout business jargon or what you think people want to hear. Be genuine! Share your passions and listen actively. People gravitate towards those who are real and relatable, not the walking equivalent of a corporate email.

3. Mind Your Manners

Remember, networking is not a card-collecting contest. It’s about building relationships. Make eye contact, shake hands firmly (no limp fish, please), and most importantly, remember their names. There’s nothing sweeter to a person’s ears than the sound of their own name, especially when it’s pronounced correctly!

4. Follow the Two-Ears-One-Mouth Rule

Good networkers are great listeners. It’s not all about broadcasting your achievements. Engage in active listening, show genuine interest in what others are saying, and ask thoughtful questions. This approach not only makes the conversation more enjoyable but also helps you gather insights about potential business opportunities.
