Tips for Creating a Safer Work Environment

It doesn't matter the size of your business, injuries can happen at any time and at any place. Safety, therefore, should be your top priority across the entirety of your business location. Whether you're working in warehousing or you're working in a simple office, you need to make sure that you're putting safety protocols and procedures in place to keep your employees in one piece.

It doesn't matter whether your employees are in the office doing paperwork or they are on the floor doing FHG Fuel Delivery, you have to make sure that they feel safe at work. So with that in mind, let's take a look at some of the tips that you need to create a safer environment for your team.

  • Be prepared for fires. In an industrial space, especially, fires are a hazard that you need to be aware of. Ensuring that extinguishers are in place, these are maintained and these are marked for the type of fire they can help, it's important. You should have clear signage for all fire exits and illuminated signs to show people where to go, especially if the power goes out.
  • Assess the risk of slips, trips and falls. All work areas, industrial or not, should be kept clear, uncluttered and lit. Employees should be wearing suitable footwear while they are on the floor and there should be no risk to them for any slips or trips. There should be some serious consequences in place for those who leave behind debris that others could trip over.
  • Speak to an electrician. You should have twice yearly checks for your business for any plugs, sockets, and switches to ensure that they are in the best possible condition. All floors should be clear of extension cords, and any extension cords should be tested properly and tagged appropriately. Safety switches should be hardwired appropriately to the electrical switchboards, and you should have somebody come out twice a year to check on all of this.
  • Ensure appropriate chemical management. Are you handling chemicals in your business premises? If so, then you need to make sure that your chemicals register and the Material Safety Data Sheets are current. Chemicals should be handled and stored to the correct guidelines and you should ensure that the employees using these chemicals are well trained in their safe use and the use of safety equipment to handle them.
  • Invest in good storage. The racking systems and storage that you have in your business should be stable, in good condition and on a good display. They should be anchored to walls to prevent anyone having any racks falling on them, and they should comply with the right working safety loads.
  • Machinery storage. Are you operating tractors or haulage equipment in your business? If so, there should be appropriate machinery storage and everything should be well insured. Any employees that are using this machinery should be well trained and they should have the appropriate licensing to do so. Failure to check this licensing is poor form on your part and you will be fined.
